The speculations are true. Samsung confirmed on Tuesday that the South Korean tech giant will unveil the Galaxy Gear smartwatch on Wednesday, Sept 4, two days before the IFA consumer tech trade show opens in Berlin, Germany.

The confirmation comes from Lee Yong-hee, executive president of Samsung's mobile business, quoted by the Korea Times.

He did not provide more details of the timepiece's specs, but based on the confirmation of its brand name of Galaxy Gear, it hints that the watch will run on Android OS.

Previous speculation in tech Web sites said that the smartwatch would likely have a 1.5GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos 4212 processor with 1GB of RAM, a 1.67-inch AMOLED screen with a 320x320 pixels resolution and possibly include Wi-FI, Bluetooth, NFC and be available in several colour options.

Along with the Galaxy Gear, Mr Lee also confirmed that Samsung will also unbox on the same day at the same event the Galaxy Note III phablet, rumoured to have a 5.9-inch screen and 4K ultra HD video camera.

Other speculated features of the Galaxy Note III include a full-HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, quad-core Snapdragon 800/Exynos octa-core processor with 3GB RAM and a 3,200mAh battery. The phablet is said to run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

NDTV Gadgets reported that Samsung would begin to ship the Galaxy Note III in September and the smartwatch in October.

With a definite date for the Galaxy Gear launch, Samsung again wins the race against arch rival Apple which also plans to release its own version of an iWatch.
