Despite the launch of new mobile devices by Samsung and Apple, Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5 continue to have rising sales. Below are the design, battery performance and price of the two handsets in Australia.

Design

Samsung Galaxy S4 is the bigger phone. The phone is 1 centimeter wider than iPhone 5 but users may not find it too difficult to operate with one hand. Galaxy S4 is mostly made of plastic whereas iPhone 5 has an aluminium back, giving it a richer feel compared to the Samsung device.

Galaxy S4 has 5-inch screen display compared to the 4-inch display of iPhone 5. The bigger size also makes Galaxy S4 heavier, weighing 130 grams whereas iPhone 5 weighs 112 grams.

Based on resolution, Galaxy S4 renders 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution and 441 pixels per inch pixel density. iPhone 5 renders 640 x 1136 pixels resolution and 326 pixels per inch pixel density in the screen. Although there is a big difference based on pixel density between the two devices, users may not find a great degree of difference in the sharpness of the images in the two devices. This could be attributed to the bigger screen size of Galaxy S4.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy S4 has Li-Ion 2600 mAh battery, allowing a talk time of about 17 hours on 3G or music play of about 62 hours. iPhone 5 has a nonremovable Li-Po 1440 mAh battery, allowing a talk time of about 8 hours on 3G or music play of about 40 hours.

Some users may find the iPhone 5 running the iOS 7 operating system tends to experience battery drain issues. Users of the device should consider consulting the Apple forums to find a suitable solution and consider downloading a battery saving app after fixing the problem. Some of Galaxy S4 users also experienced battery problems initially and Samsung had offered to have all the batteries replaced free of charge. The replacement of the batteries may have solved the problem and new devices may not give similar troubles to the users.

Price

Samsung Galaxy S4 i9500 16 GB variant costs around AU$599.95 and the 32 GB variant is around AU$639.95. iPhone 5 16 GB variant is priced at AU$839.95 and the 32 GB variant is around AU$879.95 in Australia.
