Selena Gomez's Bindi Controversy: A Cultural, Religious Faux Pas? [PHOTOS & VIDEO]
"Selenators" may love Selena Gomez's latest look for her "Come & Get It" performances but Hindu leaders are officially not pleased. A public apology has been demanded by Hindu leaders from Selena Gomez for her outfits including the bindi which has been deemed religious. For one, Selena is entirely missing out on the concept of "cultural appropriation."
During the MTV Movie Awards 2013, Selena Gomez hit the stage wearing a bindi for her performance of "Come & Get It." While fans loved Selena's sing and dance number, Hindu leaders were less than entertained. Rajan Zed, a Hindu statesman, explained exactly why they had found Selena's performance "insensitive."
"The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol," explained Zed, adding, "It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions."
However, this failed to get Selena's attention and once again the singer wore the bindi on her performance for Ellen and "Dancing with the Stars." Is Selena Gomez really this "insensitive" on cultural appropriation?
"It's a free country. Hollywood will do this anyway," states Douglas Blue Overton, a representative of Vedanta Society of Southern California.
"But we would prefer that they wouldn't use the bindi as a decoration because it has sacred meaning," continued Blue, adding, "A married woman wears this mark on her forehead as a symbol that she is trying to see God in her husband."
Not only have Hindu leaders reacted to the bindi worn by Gomez but a few viewers have also released their comments on the attire.
"Deal (sic) Selena Gomez the bindi is not just some fashion accessory you can throw on, cultural appropriation man," stated one user on Twitter while another enraged fan said, "CULTURAL APPROPRIATION AT IT'S FINEST, MY RESPECT FOR SELENA IS FADING AS WE SPEAK."
A representative of Selena Gomez has yet to comment on this controversy. Check out the slideshow to see Gomez's attire for "Come & Get It" which has earned a lot of negative remarks.
