After winning her 18th Grand Slam title this year, the world no. 1 Serena Williams is set to join running enthusiasts for the first Serena Williams Ultimate RUN South Beach on December 14. The tennis superstar will hold a run next month to support her foundation.
The Quarter Marathon, 5K Run or Walk and Ultimate KIDS Dash will feature runners of all ages to support the Serena Williams Fund, which aims to provide assistance to underprivileged children's education and families who are affected by violent crimes. The foundation has a personal meaning to Williams because her sister, Yetunde was murdered in 2003' leaving behind small children.
"Miami is very close to my heart - I've lived and trained here throughout my career - and it's such an electric and diverse city," said Williams according to USA Today. "I really hope Miami will come out to support this fun event and run with me to help youth in need, so that they're able to thrive and live fulfilling lives."
On December 14, the Ocean Drive will be closed to traffic for the event, which will take runners through Miami's renowned South Beach scene. High profile Nike Oregon Project athletes are expected to join along with Canadian long-distance Olympic runner, Cam Levins and U.S. Olympian Shannon Rowbury among other notable celebrities and athletes.
Serena Williams is hopeful to run at the event with her best friend and former world no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, who recently finished the New York Marathon a few weeks ago. In addition to Wozniacki, Andy Murray and Venus Williams are also expected to attend.
Every year, the 33-year-old participates in a run for Thanksgiving that gave her the idea to host a run. She is positive that people will love the event that will have karaoke at the beach after.
Williams started running 10 years ago to stay in shape for her game and improve her endurance on the court. She revealed that she prefers to run in short distances like 5K, which do not kill the body. Race fees range from $20 for the kids to $45 for adults.
