Showrunner Says Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes Is Neither Gay Nor Straight
According to a co-creator of “Sherlock Holmes,” Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes cannot be considered straight. However, it could be said that Sherlock is not gay on the popular TV series either.
According to Steven Moffat, if there is one thing that fans of the series must know, it is that Sherlock Holmes is asexual. Everyone wants to assume that he is gay because of his lack of interest in sex, but the co-creator claims that this is simply not the case. Moffat, who is also the showrunner for “Doctor Who,” claimed that Holmes is not invested in sex because he cannot afford the distraction.
"He’s willfully staying away from that to keep his brain pure — a Victorian belief,” he explained to Entertainment Weekly. He added that this is a contentious issue ever since, but the reality is that this 100-year-old character has already been saying over and over that he does not engage in sex at all.
This runs in contrast to what Benedict Cumberbatch himself shared in 2012. He said he could not see why the detective should be considered asexual. He recounted his own experience of having asexual fans come up to him, thanking him for his portrayal of them, but he said he wonders where that bit came about. He personally does not believe that Sherlock is not a sexual being; rather, he firmly believes that the man is just “too busy to have sex.”
In real life, though, Cumberbatch is straight. He is continuously being fawned over by ladies even though he recently got married to Sophie Hunter and is already expecting their first kid. An evidence of how much people adore Cumberbatch is the new model of the actor created mainly from chocolate. Fans of the actor, who call themselves Cumberbitches, always said he looks good enough to eat, and now they can. Voted as the “dishiest dramatic actor on UK TV,” Cumberbatch is honoured with a life-size sculpture made of cocoa. The dishiest dramatic actor on UK was determined by the new on demand drama channel, UKTVplay, wherein 2,000 ladies were asked to vote on who they believe is the most tastiest man on TV drama.
