On Dec 10, 2014 BBC announced that record-breaking cyclist Sir Chris Hoy has been awarded the 2014 Sports Personality Lifetime Award. He will be awarded this Sunday at the award ceremony at Glasgow along with other prize winners for the year. He will join the likes of Sir Alex Fergusson, Pele, Lord Coe and Sir Ian Botham as recent winners of this prestigious award. Hoy, winner of four Olympic gold medals retired from competitions in 2013.

The shortlisted candidates for the 2014 sports personality of the year award are golfer Rory Mcllroy, Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale, gymnast Max Whitlock, F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, swimmer Adam Peaty and British skeleton racer Lizzy Yarnold. Northern Ireland golfer Rory Mcllroy finished the 2014 European Tour at the top of the leader board and had a very successful season overall. Gareth Bale won the La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid FC last year. Max Whitlock won three gold medals at this year's commonwealth games in Glasgow and another gold medal at the European Championships in Sofia. Lewis Hamilton won his second F1 world championship this year. Adam Peaty won two gold medals in swimming in this year's commonwealth games in Glasgow and four more at the European Championships at Berlin. Lizzy Yarnold won a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games at Sochi.

The past three winners of this prestigious award have been Andy Murray (tennis, 2013), Sir Bradley Wiggins (cycling, 2012) and Mark Cavendish (cycling, 2011). Other awards to be presented on the occasion are team of the year, coach of the year, overseas sports personality of the year, young sports personality of the year and unsung hear of the year. Incidentally this will be the 61st iteration of the award ceremony.
