A girl in Auckland, New Zealand has finally met her best friend in the United States through an Internet campaign launched by Skype dubbed as "Stay Together."
Auckland teenager Paige Taylor met her best friend Sarah Stump from Nappanee, Indiana. Both of the girls were born with a part of their arms missing. They became fast friends after their mothers reached out to one another hoping someone can understand what they were going through.
Ms Taylor said she and Ms Stump became close after exchanging pictures and letters for some time. After losing contact for a few years, both of them started to exchange emails and then chatting on Skype. Ms Taylor said their friendship has lasted 8 years and yet they were thousands of miles away from each other.
Ms Stump said she considered her best friend as a long lost sister, a sibling she never had but should have had. Thanks to Skype's Internet campaign, the best friends have finally met.
According to Ms Stump's mother, she knew her daughter would be born missing part of her arm when she was 20 weeks pregnant. She said she wanted to find someone who understood what she was going through. She visited a Web site and found a mother and daughter named Teresa and Paige.
After corresponding for some time, they lost touch.
A spokesperson for Skype said the story of Sarah and Paige was so inspiring that they brought the two friends together face to face for the first time. A thousand entries were submitted for Skype's campaign but Sarah and Paige's story stood out as the best.
Like other teenage girls, the best friends talk about their common interests and constantly give updates about each other's lives. Meeting and knowing someone who has been born with the same disability has strengthened their bond even more. Although the challenges of living with a disability remain, Paige said it was nice to know that someone is always there to understand.
Both girls plan to travel together in the future and live close to each other someday.
