Sony appears all set to compete in the increasingly lucrative phablet market via two upcoming Xperia handsets that pack the muscles to slug it out with Samsung's Galaxy Note series on release date.

According to Xperia Blog, works are now underway for two supersized Sony smartphones that will borrow most of their looks from the current Sony flagship Xperia Z. At the moment, the units are known by their codenames Togari and Honami.

Of the two, Honami offers substantial details, provided by a source who claims to be a direct participant in the Sony phablet testing phase, the same blog report said.

Honami is a 1080p mobile handset that measures up with the Samsung Galaxy S4, with its screen reportedly stretched to 5.0-inch. The device will draw its power from a quad-core Snapdragon 800 chip that rams along with a mighty speed of 2.3GHz while tapping on a 2GB of RAM.

Firing up the Full HD screen rendering is an Adreno 330 GPU, with the phone screen serving as a more than sufficient view finder for the Honami main camera that is equipped not only with a 20MP sensor but also Cybershot CMOS and Carl Zeiss lens. Obviously, much of the strength of this Sony phablet lies on the snapping department.

Togari, on the other hand, is also 1080p but the report pointed to scant description of the unit. It will have the same Xperia Z form factor and like the previous iPhone versions and Nexus 4, its back cover is made of glass material.

Togari, according to BGR News, was floated momentarily as making a short peek via the 2013 Mobile World Congress in February but nothing came out of it.

Now, it is suggested that Sony will uncloak its phablet answers to the dominant Galaxy Note lineup this coming September and the logical platform of choice would be the 2013 IFA gadget showcase in Berlin.

Like their Sony sibling in Xperia Z, both the Togari and the Honami are believed to show off extra handset durability in the form of waterproof and dustproof casings.

Honami, specifically, is part of the One Sony campaign pitch, which houses all Sony devices in a singular dominant branding, in this case - the Xperia smartphone.
