Sophie Monk’s Alleged Cyber Stalker Charged With Harassment

Sophie Monk has unwittingly become the first Australian celebrity to have a cyber stalker charged with harassing her online. The 34-year-old singer/actress endured five years of harassment from suspect James McCabe, who sent her 150 threatening and sexually explicit Twitter messages.

As the Sunday Telegraph reported, McCabe was arrested by police at his home in Tasmania on December 19 after Monk finally contacted police.

She has been the subject of McCabe’s obsession for years, with the 30-year-old suspect sending her disturbing Twitter and Facebook messages. His obsession was reignited after she returned to Australia from California earlier in 2013. His tweets have increased in number and intensity in the weeks leading up of his arrest.

Monk has contacted police after McCabe allegedly sent her and a family member death threats.

McCabe, for his part, told the Telegraph that he had cooperated with the police after his arrest. He gave them his phone and personal recordings of the former Bardot singer, and even stopped tweeting her on the day of his arrest.

He revealed that his interest in the actress started in 1999 when she emerged as a singer in the reality show “Popstars.” “She was like a role model for me. When I first saw her, I was a drug addict and she just stood out. I thought she was this regular girl who had turned her life around and I wanted to do the same,” he told the paper. Since he has promised not to tweet Monk anymore, he has opted to send other celebrities tweets instead, including Mike Tyson and Joel Madden, twin brother of Benji Madden, whom Monk has once dated.

Monk will be joining former Spice Girl Melanie Brown, Jules Land, and Merrick Watts in a new breakfast show from 2DayFM in January. Their new radio show will replace the “Kyle and Jackie O,” which is headed by departing duo Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O Henderson.
