‘Spider-Man' Spinoff': Emma Stone Comments On “Spider-Gwen” Role
The recent revelation in the “Spider-Gwen” comics that Gwen Stacey becomes the web slinger instead of Peter Parker had fans wondering if Emma Stone would be willing to suit up as the hero. It’s still uncertain whether Marvel would be interested to do a “Spider-Gwen” film. However, the actress expressed her interest on the character.
Emma Stone was asked for her thoughts on the “Spider-Gwen” comics during an interview with MTV News about her new film with Bradley Cooper entitled “Aloha.” Considering the actress portrayed the role of Gwen Stacey in “The Amazing Spider-Man” series, it’s only natural for her to be considered as the ideal candidate to play as Spider-Gwen. Emma Stone didn’t actually rule out the idea when she said, “I think a lot of pieces would have to come together.”
The actress also revealed she’s read the “Spider-Gwen” comics. But as far as starring in a movie, Emma Stone revealed she knows “nothing about it.” According to MTV News, the actress also admitted not having any idea why the character is called as such.
Marvel had reportedly decided to call her “Spider-Gwen” to differentiate her Jessica Drew a.k.a. Spider-Woman. Then there are also those other female spider-heroes such as Spider-Girl, Araña and Silk. Apparently, “Spider-Gwen” was the only character name available.
According to Cinema Blend, having a “Spider-Gwen” film wouldn’t affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe at all since its storyline exists in an alternate universe. It would supposedly make for a fun first project for Marvel especially since it’s not attached to any prior films.
Comic Book Movie likewise claimed it’s not unlikely for Marvel to try and make “Spider-Gwen” into a movie. Previous hacked emails from Sony had reportedly revealed the studio’s plans to make a “Spider-Man” spinoff film. However, this time it would be a female-led spinoff. The emails supposedly also revealed talks between Sony and Marvel to bring back Emma Stone to either play the role of Carnage or possibly as Spider-Gwen.
Nonetheless, whether Marvel will take an interest in a “Spider-Gwen” film still remains unclear. According to MTV News, the comics would first need a huge demand for a theatrical release for it to be made into a movie.
