‘Star Wars: Episode VIII': Rey's parentage could be revealed
Rey’s parents in the Star Wars Universe has always been a question of interest among fans since the character was revealed in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” That question still lingers after the movie didn’t reveal her lineage. However, it’s expected that more details about her family will be revealed in the sequel, “Star Wars: Episode VIII.”
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams talked briefly about the sequel during a press tour for the Television Critics Association. According to Slashfilm, Abrams hinted that Rey’s parentage will be discussed in “Star Wars: Episode VIII” when one reporter asks if she is a Kenobi.
Abrams said he knows “quite a bit” about her family story. However, he declined to go into details as courtesy to “Star Wars: Episode VIII” director Rian Johnson.
“The last thing I’m going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about,” Abrams told the press.
Whether details of Rey’s parentage will finally be revealed in “Star Wars: Episode VIII” is still uncertain. It’s believed her story will be briefly shown in the film and a big reveal will come out years after in “Star Wars: Episode IX,” where Johnson will be writing the story with George Lucas.
“Star Wars: Episode IX” director Colin Trevorrow likewise hinted that Rey’s lineage will be fully revealed in the movie. He said during an interview with Entertainment Online that he’s read all the theories about the character’s lineage. Trevorrow assured that fans will be pleased after learning about Rey’s parentage.
Trevorrow also hinted that Rey’s parents are mainstays in the Star Wars Universe. They’re someone who fans already know.
“What's interesting is I'm not creating a host of new characters. I have a lot of characters that people really love that we're going to make sure are all honored,” he told Entertainment Online.
It was previously rumoured that Rey could be Luke Skywalker’s daughter. During an old interview Daisy Ridley hinted her character started out in “solitary,” which supposedly also points to Luke Skywalker’s solitary introduction in the “Star Wars” saga.
Prior to the release of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens," fans speculated that Rey is the daughter of Han Solo and Princess Leia. She is the brother of main villain Kylo Ren. However, it was clear after the movie’s release in December that her parentage remains a mystery.
