‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens:' Andy Serkis talks Supreme Leader Snoke's facial description, character filming
Andy Serkis has once again revealed some more details about his character in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Serkis, who plays Supreme Leader Snoke, recently talked about the villain’s facial qualities and recalled the scary experience of filming his scenes.
The actor sat down with Empire magazine for an interview about the much-anticipated “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Talking about Supreme Leader Snoke’s facial characteristics, Serkis said his villain character is “severely damaged.” According to him, Kylo Ren’s (Adam Driver) superior is “very scarred and disfigured.”
Serkis also recalled his first day of filming his scenes as Supreme Leader Snoke and hinted the magnitude of the villain’s physical qualities. He told Empire that his first day involved standing on a 25-foot podium while acting out scenes with Kylo Ren and General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson).
“I was very high up, totally on my own, away from everybody else, but acting with them,” he said.
Serkis teased that Supreme Leader Snoke is truly a force to reckon with in the movie. He revealed that during filming they had to use a “‘Kongolizer” method of having sound come out of speakers to give a sense of scale and distance for the character.” The actor admitted that portraying Supreme Leader Snoke in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is one of the most scary film experiences he’s ever had.
In a previous interview, Serkis also explained that he had to portray Supreme Leader Snoke through motion capture because “the scale of him” is too extreme. His facial design alone cannot be replicated through layers of make-up and prosthetics. Serkis described the villain as someone who has a “very distinctive, idiosyncratic bone structure and facial structure.”
Supreme Leader Snoke is said to be a very powerful figure in the Dark Side of the Force. He may be a new character in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but he has reportedly existed for a very long time. Serkis said in his previous interview with Collider that the villain is badly damaged since he has been through a lot and has lived to witness past events in the galaxy.
