‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens': J.J. Abrams comments on Luke Skywalker being an evil Jedi
Luke Skywalker is nowhere to be seen on the official movie poster of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and nor was he on the final movie trailer. It’s believed the Jedi Master was purposely hidden from viewers because he has turned to the Dark Side. Movie director J.J. Abrams recently commented on these rumours when asked of the possibility of Luke being evil in the film.
Extra’s Renee Bargh caught up with the director at the 11th Annual GLSEN Respect Awards recently to talk to him about “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Abrams was asked if there is any truth to fans’ speculations that Luke Skywalker may be evil in the film.
“I’m always interested in seeing people’s theories. But what would be cool is you know people finally seeing the movie and see what he really is. You want people to be debating things even before the movie comes out. It’s a dream,” he said.
Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, revealed during a 2005 episode of “Dinner for Five” that he had pitched an evil Luke to “Star Wars” creator George Lucas. He had thought it would be “more fun to play.” The actor said he thought that turning evil is where his character was eventually heading. Hamill had considered the idea of the Jedi Master turning to the Dark Side to be a “pivotal moment.” Interestingly, Abrams and other guests including Marvel’s Stan Lee were also in on the discussion with host Kevin Smith as seen in the video below.
It’s believed Luke Skywalker is not on the official movie poster for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” because his physical presence alone can spoil the movie. During his self-imposed exile and 30 years after the events of “Return of the Jedi,” Luke has reportedly drastically changed. He has grown a scraggy beard. His hair has grown longer and has turned grey. It’s believed he also has scars on his face from his past battles.
A source claimed fans would see a different Jedi Master in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The Luke Skywalker in the film is said to be “wizened but crazed.”
