‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill says he was 'terrified' to reprise his role
Mark Hamill recalled his first reaction when he was called to reprise his role as Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Apparently, the actor was hesitant to jump back in to the movie several decades after the franchise became a worldwide hit and a pop culture phenomenon.
The Daily Star caught up with Hamill during the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” premiere in Europe, where he was asked about his return onscreen to "the galaxy far far away." The actor admitted he was “terrified to come back.” The 64-year old considered his age as one factor that made him rethink his preparedness to reprise Luke Skywalker.
“I thought, 'just leave this stuff well alone, I'm in the elderly, reckless part of my career, I shouldn't be doing this.' I should be wandering around a beach somewhere with a metal detector and telling kids to get off my lawn. For me it was like, 'Why go back to what you've had before?' Been there done that,” he said.
Hamill likewise revealed that he’s been enjoying life away from the Hollywood spotlight. He admitted he loves “being off the radar” and living a normal life with his dog and kids. However, he thought that it was too much of an opportunity to miss. Hamill eventually reconsidered the offer and agreed to reprise Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
The actor also talked about his return as Jedi Master Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in a recent interview with People. Hamill revealed how it has so far been an amazing experience being part of the new film. He also called it as an “unexpected thrill” to return to the franchise, which he said is something that he wouldn’t want to miss for the world.
Hamill told the publication he wouldn’t want to miss the chance of working together again with the original “Star Wars” casts including Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Harrison Ford (Han Solo) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca).
"If they were up for it, I was up for it,” he said.
The whereabouts of Hamill’s Luke Skywalker 30 years after “Return of the Jedi” will finally be revealed when “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens in US theatres on Friday.
