Reports in the past have stated that plot details in the opening scene of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” involves Rey finding Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber in Tatooine. This discovery is what supposedly leads her and Finn to search for the Jedi Master. However, according to a recent report, it is not Rey who finds the Jedi relic but another new character named Naka.
According to Jason Ward from Making Star Wars, the opening scene in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” involves a farmer, not a junkshop owner, named Naka. He discovers Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber as it falls from the sky to the ground in a Savannah environment. He starts a fire with the weapon after accidentally igniting it and runs away in fear. However, he reportedly comes back for the lightsaber so it doesn’t get burned and takes it to an elder called The Vicar.
Ward said this Vicar is likely just a code name used for a character most likely portrayed by Max Von Sydow. It’s reportedly the Vicar who contacts the rebels after seeing Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) arrives to retrieve the weapon from the Vicar. Unfortunately, according to Ward, the Empire also winds up at the location. “Not sure if the Empire followed Poe or intercepted the initially transmission he received,” he said. Poe immediately hides the lightsaber inside the little droid, BB-8, after which he starts to fight off the Stormtroopers.
The validity of the said plot details for the opening scene in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” still warrants confirmation from Lucasfilm or Disney. However, Ward said he’s “very confident” with his information and that it’s “likely as concrete as we can get short of having read the script.” He claims the opening scene was shot last summer at the Pinewood Studios set of the movie. It reportedly somehow also coincides with previous speculations that Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber in the movie is safely hidden inside one of the droid’s spheres.
According to a previous report from the International Business Times Australia, BB-8 has a secret compartment in one of its spheres that holds the lightsaber. At that time it wasn’t revealed how and who put the weapon there. Initially, it was speculated the opening scene in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” involves Daisy Ridley’s Rey finding the weapon and taking it with her as she and Finn search for Luke Skywalker.
