While fellow fighting game “Mortal Kombat X” is currently hogging the limelight, the majority of hardcore fighting game fans will no doubt have their eyes on the horizon, on Capcom’s “Street Fighter 5.” Development on Capcom’s Unreal Engine 4-powered PC and PS4 exclusive is still in its early stages, but producer Yoshinoro Ono has spoken out to give fans an idea of what to expect.

While we’ve only seen fleeting glimpses of gameplay, Ono promises that “Street Fighter 5” will offer much more than an incremental improvement over its predecessor. In a new interview with Edge Magazine, as reported by Games Radar, Ono states that the success and support of “Street Fighter 4” has afforded the team the opportunity to push “Street Fighter 5” further than fans would expect.

“With Street Fighter 5, we have a fantastic opportunity to create something with a larger scope, a game that encompasses all that Street Fighter has become in the last few years, but which also expands on that to become something it has never been before as well. It’s going to be a title that caters to fans, of course, but one that also invites completely new players onto the scene,” he said.

Ono went on to add that the development team hopes to create a game that no one is expecting, adding that if “Street Fighter 4” was about reviving a passion for the franchise, then “Street Fighter 5 “ is about growing the passion. The long-time series producer said that team morale is high and that he’s personally taken on the role of mentor for the new development team, passing on all the knowledge he has learned from Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune to a new generation of developers. Gamers who wish to read the interview in full can pick up a digital copy of Edge Magazine.

As noted by Gamespot, “Street Fighter 5” was revealed during December’s inaugural PSX event as a PlayStation exclusive, though the game will also be making its way to the PC. In February, a Capcom Unity blog post announced that it would be offering the largest and most ambitious online beta program in franchise history and that gamers looking to be part of the process could guarantee access by preordering the game. A vague 2016 release has been mentioned by Capcom, but the developer stressed no firm date has been set, and there is no further information on when the beta will take place.
