After headlining the Pepsi Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show, Coldplay failed to impress their fans who claim that Beyonce and Bruno Mars upstaged the British band's performance.

On Sunday, Coldplay treated the audience and home viewers with some of their biggest hits during the halftime show in San Francisco. Led by frontman Chris Martin, the band opened with “Viva La Vida,” following it with “Paradise” and “Adventure of a Lifetime.” Adding to the colourful stage and musical fanfare, a marching band and a group of dancers dressed as giant flowers also appeared on stage.

During Coldplay’s performance of “Clocks,” a video montage played in the background featuring previous halftime acts, such as Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Prince and U2. Coldplay concluded their show with “Up & Up.”

In the middle of their performance, artists Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars took the stage to sing their hit “Uptown Funk.” Beyonce then appeared, performing her new song "Formation" while sporting a black and gold military ensemble. The songstress, dubbed “The Queen,” even had a dance-off with Mars.

Even before finishing the Super Bowl 2016 halftime show and throughout their act, Coldplay got flak on social media. Those who watched were upset about what they call a mediocre performance, and took to Twitter to express their disappointment.

Coldplay’s performance also earned negative reviews from the media. “On one side, you have a woman whose just-dropped, much-discussed Formation proves why “fierce” is linked to her name, serving as a sizzling, sexy, super-charged break from a sport that assiduously markets its own fierceness,” USA Today says in an article. “On the other, you have a popular but polarising British band whose work has been described by other USA Today critics as “earnest” and “sensitive” — not exactly words one immediately associates with the NFL.”

Adding salt to injury, “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson didn’t seem to recognise Coldplay, mistaking them for Maroon 5 in her Instagram account. The actress wrote, “YAAAAAAASSSSSS!!! #maroon5 is life to me!!!” Henson deleted her post, but Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine was able to take a screen shot and shared it in his account. The actress has since owned up to her blooper.
