Long-time Superman comic book fans are hoping that the Man of Steel would make an appearance in the new CBS series “Supergirl,” starring former "Glee" star Melissa Benoist. However, they may be in for a disappointment as it’s been confirmed that Superman will not be personally doing a cameo in the series.

Executive producer for “Supergirl” Sarah Schechter recently squashed reports of Superman likely making an appearance in the series during an interview with Hitfix. Schechter blatantly denied the character’s involvement in the show since technically the story does not revolve around him but at his cousin Kara Danvers.

“I think the reason why Superman’s not in the show is because it’s not about him. And it’s her show and it’s about her and he is just sort of a shadow in the back of her psyche, and I think that’s the right way to portray him because that’s how she experiences it,” Schechter said.

Screenwriter for “Supergirl” Andrew Kreisberg also revealed details about the show’s story in the same interview with Hitfix. He confirmed the show will not tie-in with any versions of the Superman story, be it Henry Cavill’s or Christopher Reeve’s version of Kal El.

“It’s a version of Superman and what he has gone through in the world that we live in and the things that he’s faced and what’s happened to him vis-a-vis how it reflects on Kara is all our invention,” he said.

The excitement for Superman to actually appear in “Supergirl” increased even more when it was reported that the character has been cast, according to Cinema Blend. But the actor’s name hasn’t been revealed yet. Viewers also saw a brief glimpse of Kal-El although not fully in the flesh nor was his face revealed in the pilot episode. There were also references to Superman in the pilot episode when the show opened with Kara as a little girl being tasked to protect the then-baby Kal-El.

As what Schechter said, Superman will only act as a background in the show. He will not be an actual character in “Supergirl” although he exists in the same universe as Kara Danvers.
