Spoiler Alert: This review recaps the highlights of "Supernatural" Season 9, Episode 1 "I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here."
Sam Winchester in a coma.
Sam (Jared Padalecki), the younger Winchester brother, ended up in a hospital bed in a coma after performing a ritual with demon Crowley (Mark Sheppard) where Dean (Jensen Ackles) put a stop to it in the Season 8 finale. The brothers were able to converse with each other in Sam's head where Dean tells Sam the bad news that he is dying.
In the hospital, Dean Winchester has no idea what to do to save Sam's life that appears to be "in God's hands." Dean saw the "Chapel" sign so he decided to send out an open prayer begging for help to whoever can hear him.
The Human Castiel.
Castiel's grace has been taken away by Metatron and it caused the complete transformation of the angel into a human being. Castiel (Misha Collins) appeared in the premiere episode wandering in Longmont, Colorado where he meets an angel named Hael who appears to be lost and looking for guidance as well.
However, Hael has other plans that keep Castiel as her hostage like taking over his strong vessel to become a lot stronger. Cas, of course, does not like the plan so he freed himself from Hael by crashing her car. An upset and injured Hael threatened Cas that she will inform the angels kicked out of Heaven where he is since they are after him for what he had done.
The car crash made Castiel experience for the first time what it is like to be human like bleeding and feeling pain. Cas' other human experiences showed in the premiere episode include doing his own laundry, feeling hunger and thirst.
Angel Ezekiel to the rescue.
Two angels who have heard Dean's desperate prayer showed up at the hospital but the first angel only wants to kill Castiel. Ezekiel (Tahmoh Penikett) is really willing to help and he tries his best to save Sam's life while Dean fights off more angry-at-Castiel angels.
Bobby Singer convinces Sam to "just die."
In Sam's head, a battle is going on: Dean telling him to hold on and keep fighting while Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) convinces Sam that he can just die, move on and leave a legacy behind. This conflict caused the Winchester brothers to argue more with Sam telling Dean that there is nothing to fight for.
Bobby continues to convince Sam that he can now let go of fighting as the two walk in the woods. It turns out Bobby is leading Sam to a place where everything that he needs will help him on his way: a mysterious cabin.
Death in the Cabin.
Death (Julian Richings) welcomes Sam inside the cabin with the message: "Hello Sam, I've been waiting for you." The two have a talk and Sam sounded ready to go as long as it is clear that when he's dead, he will stay dead and no one will ever get hurt anymore.
However, Dean Winchester still does not give up on his brother and reminds Sam about his promise that they are in this whole mess together. Dean tells Sam "There ain't no me if there ain't no you" which made Sam changed his mind and agree to get the help he needs.
Angelic Possession: A Bad Option to Save Sam's Life.
Ezekiel becomes weak while saving Sam and it made Dean more desperate in finding ways to keep his brother alive. Ezekiel revealed to Dean that there is a way but it is a bad option: He can possess Sam to heal him from the inside while healing himself at the same time during the process.
A desperate Dean finally agrees to the option to save his brother and decided to keep the angelic possession a secret. This is now the burden that Dean Winchester will have to carry around in Season 9 as he acts normal in front of his brother who ended up possessed with an angel because of his personal choice.
"Supernatural" Season 9 continues with the second episode titled "Devil May Care" on Tuesday, October 15, at 9 p.m. on the CW network. The upcoming episode is expected to reveal what Dean's plan is for keeping Crowley in his trunk, the return of Abaddon (Alaina Huffman) with the desire of taking over Hell and the other tricky situations involving Sam's angelic possession.
