Tennis Legend John McEnroe Says Novak Djokovic Can Be Considered As One Of The All-Time Greats
Tennis fans often dispute over which player should be hailed all-time greats. Tennis legend John McEnroe recently said that Novak Djokovic, who has ended his season as World No. 1 after winning the ATP World Tour Finals in London, has earned his place in his list of great tennis players of all time.
"That shows me that he has become one of the greats of all time," McEnroe said via Reuters. "He is going to be there a couple more years."
According to McEnroe, Djokovic has been "incredible and rock solid" with his performance. The seven-time Grand Slam champion said that Djokovic could be on his way to winning a French Open title, which is the only Grand Slam trophy that the Serb is yet to win, if Rafael Nadal is still not able to play at his best level. Djokovic made it to the finals of the 2014 French Open, but Nadal defeated the Serb and claimed his ninth title at the Roland Garros.
McEnroe said that he wouldn't put Djokovic yet to his list of greatest players ever lived alongside Nadal, Roger Federer, Rod Laver, and Pete Sampras, but also stated that the Serb is in the top 10. At the rate things are going as far as how Djokovic is performing on major and minor tournaments is concerned, he thinks that Djokovic will break into the club in no time. He added that Djokovic just keeps on getting better.
Meanwhile, McEnroe has teamed up with Andy Murray to play against Tim Henman and Pat Cast in an exhibition match at the O2 Arena, Mail Online reports. McEnroe showed off his skills that saw him win 77 singles titles and 71 doubles titles in his illustrious tennis career. He thanked Murray for the Scot's participation and thought that he and Murray could do well in doubles.
Murray, on the other hand, praised McEnroe and said that the American is truly a legend of the sport. Murray said he is thankful for being having the opportunity to play on the court with great tennis legends such as McEnroe, Henman, and Cash.
