Reports are rife about the death of music icon Prince, who made an indelible mark on the sound of the 80s with his eclectic style and distinct vocal prowess. As news about his untimely demise spread all over the world, many of his fans are honouring Prince’s life and work by remembering some of his greatest songs.

Considered as one of the best-selling artists of all times, the 57-year-old multi-talented singer carved his identity in the music industry with classic hits like “Purple Rain,” “The Beautiful Ones” and “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” amongst several others. The career of Prince, whose real name is Prince Rogers Nelson, spanned for about three decades loaded with chart-topping songs earned the nod of fans and critics.

Apart from selling over 100 million records worldwide, Prince won a total of seven Grammy awards and one Golden Globe award. He also earned an Academy award for best original song score for “Purple Rain.” Often referred to as “His Royal Badness” and “Purple One,” Prince had five singles at the top of the charts, while 14 of his songs were included in the Top 10. Named as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time by the Rolling Stone, Prince is also credited for pioneering what is known as Minneapolis sound, which was combination of pop, synth and new wave.

At present, the cause of death of Prince remains unconfirmed and reports say that authorities are still investigating the incident. An autopsy will be performed to identify what happened to the singer, who was found unconscious in an elevator at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, U.S. Prince was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m., according to a report by CNN.

Prince’s death was confirmed by his publicist, but details surrounding the incident are still being kept under wraps. “It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning,” publicist Yvette Noel-Schure said, as quoted by CNN.

Considered by many as Prince’s most famous hit, “Purple Rain” tells the story of the singer’s regrets over his relationships with his loved ones and bandmates. The power ballad, which runs for around eight minutes, was the soundtrack for Prince’s debut film.

“Cream” (from the 1991 album “Diamonds and Pearls”)
Another chart-topping hit is “Cream,” which was supposedly written by Prince while standing in front of a mirror. Prince’s signature music and moves earned the video a citation from MTV Video Music Awards for being the Best Dance Video in 1992.

Most fans can’t get enough of the music video for the track, wherein Prince showcased his choreography skills while appearing in a half shirt and leather jacket before turning shirtless. The pop song enjoyed the top of Hot 100 for two sweet weeks.
