Thief is finally coming back with a next-gen, currently untitled, version. And this time, it has been confirmed by Square-Enix and Eidos Montreal.

After a series of screenshots was leaked by GamesManiac, a Russian website, and after nine long years of waiting, it has also been confirmed that it's out for release next year to the PS4, the next-gen Xbox, and the PC, according to Edge-Online.

Aside from the photos, which have been compared to the likes of Dishonored, it seems that the only other facts is that it won't be called Thief 4 despite it being the fourth installment, reports Kotaku.

Game Informer features a coverage trailer, where creators showcase some of the artwork involved in the next-gen release, as well as the amount of work that justifies the long wait since its last game.

According to GameInformer, the series will find the hero Garrett back in the City and ready to steal to make the big bucks. But it's a city with tension and plague, led by the tyrant Baron, who makes a long-waited appearance from previous installments.

The cover of the next game also showcases the dark nature of the game, which can be a rush of fondness and familiarity to fans who have waited long for this reboot.

"We're handling a precious gemstone with Thief," said Eidos Montreal's general manager Stephane D' Astous said to VentureBeat.

"Fans remember the original games very fondly and we want to preserve that essence which we have excellent experience of doing at Eidos Montreal, while also introducing Thief to a brand new, next-generation, audience."

It may be back to its roots for Thief, which may not be a bad thing considering the long wait. Check out the trailer below for GameInformer's coverage trailer and wait for updates on the game's details.
