Three Ways Nina Dobrev's Elena Gilbert Character Could Exit 'Vampire Diaries'

Nina Dobrev’s recent announcement that she is leaving “Vampire Diaries” after Season 6 has left many fans downhearted. The actress will finally say goodbye to portraying different characters including that of Amara and Katherine. After six years of being one of the frontrunners of the show, she is finally letting go of her longtime role as Elena Gilbert. Following her confirmation, the big question now is how Nina Dobrev’s exit will be incorporated in the show’s storyline.

According to Moviepilot, there are three possible scenarios or plot “Vampire Diaries” could consider. First would be the death of Nina Dobrev’s character, Elena Gilbert. This time it would be the character’s actual death as she has reportedly already been killed off a couple of times before in the show. According to the site, she first tempted fate during the hybrid sacrifice and the second after she was driven off the Wickery Bridge. Elena’s death could also supposedly make for a good storyline as the Salvatore brothers will be left in mourning and fighting each other over the death of the woman they both love.

“Vampire Diaries” could reportedly also show Nina Dobrev’s exit after Season 6 by having Elena Gilbert take the vampire cure. Paul Wesley was once asked whether Elena should take the Steroline and leave Mystic Falls as a human. The actor replied, “I think Elena should take cure and leave both Salvatore brothers behind."

This storyline wouldn’t be too far along considering that the cure was handed to Damon Salvatore after Bonnie brought it back from the 1920s. It’s supposedly possible for Damon to finally let go of Elena by allowing her to take the cure and consequently giving her what she’s always wanted, and that’s to live the human life.

Another send off for Nina Dobrev from “Vampire Diaries” after Season 6 would reportedly be through “The Originals.” The series had flashbacks showing how much Elijah cared for the doppelganger Tatia (also played by Nina Dobrev). While Elijah is said to be heartbroken over Hailey’s marriage to Jackson, it would supposedly be a perfect timing for Elena to head over to New Orleans and comfort Elijah.

However, it’s still uncertain how Nina Dobrev’s exit from “Vampire Diaries” will be featured in the show. According to Hollywood Life, she may still be in the series finale to reprise her role as Elena Gilbert. A source claimed that the show wants to give her the proper send off, and being Season 6 as her last, they want to make sure her remaining episodes will “mean something.”
