Tom Cruise Sues Tabloid for $50 Million
Tom Cruise backfires at Life and Style magazine after the publication made claims that he abandoned his 6-year-old daughter Suri after his divorce with Katie Holmes.
Tom Cruise has kept his cool throughout his divorce process with Katie Holmes. But with allegations that he abandoned his daughter Suri, the actor decided that the media has gone too far.
According to the "Mission Impossible" actor's lawyer, Bert Fields, Tom filed for a $50 million lawsuit against the Life and Style magazine for defamation and false-light invasion of privacy against Bauer Publishing. The actor filed his case last Wednesday in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles based on a report gathered by TMZ.
Tom reportedly got fiery with the magazine's headline that says, "Suri in Tears: Abandoned by Her Dad" which was accompanied by a picture of little Suri crying. Fields and Cruise argues that the real story did not support the claims made in the headline and the photo was taken after Suri was not permitted to bring home a puppy.
Fields wrote in his statement that "anyone knows who saw their photos together yesterday and today, is a disgusting, vicious lie." The lawyer added Cruise had been shooting a film all the while but still maintained communication with Suri every day.
"Tom doesn't go around suing people. He's not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he's going to sue," Fields said in a statement.
Fields also threatened to sue American Media publisher of The National Enquirer last July after it branded Tom Cruise as a "monster."
According to Fields, any money that will be recovered from the lawsuit will be donated to charity. Cruise was ordered to pay $400,000 a year or child support to her daughter Suri.
