Too much Facebook can kill you
Brit woman knifes boyfriend for ignoring her when on social media site
The effect of spending too much time on social media sites go beyond sleep disturbance. In Britain, a 23-year-old British hairdresser was convicted of murder and sentenced to 12 years for killing her 24-year-old boyfriend on Aug 14. She used a bread knife. When cops found the bloody knife on the floor, she said that he injured himself.
The reason Terri-Marie Palmer stabbed the heart of Damon Searson was because she felt he spent too much time on Facebook, reports The New York Post. Before she ended Searson’s life, Palmer, ironically posted on Facebook, “He p***** me off sitting on Facebook, completely blanking me when I’m talking to him,” quotes The Mirror Online.
Palmer frequently whined on the most popular media site about Searson’s behaviour. She specifically cited his scrolling FB messages on his mobile phone, adding different women as friends and posting half-naked photos of himself, while not acknowledging even her presence.
Their fights were also posted online. She commented that his topless photo is gross, while he replied, “Don’t expect any different to come out of your mouth f—king b—ch.” Searson likely ignored also most of her posts because Palmer once threatened him, “I’m so angry and hurt I honestly want to f—king stab you.”
Besides ignoring her, Palmer also disliked that he was dependent on her financially since he was jobless, while she works at Costa Del Sol in Lancaster, England, a hair salon where they met in 2015 and the lived in. She also complained of his being too possessive.
Palmer had apparently deactivated her Facebook, while Searson’s obviously could no longer do it. His last post was a shirtless selfie a day before his girlfriend stabbed him to death. Queen’s 1995 hit song “Too Much Love Will Kill You,” could as well be his theme song, with just a change of two words.
Sleep deprivation among young people, like Palmer and Searson, is one of the negative effects when young adults spend so much time on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Reddit or Instagram, warns the study by researchers at the University of Pittsburg School of Medicine. The study found that the survey participants spent an average of 61 minutes daily and visit various social media portals 30 times weekly, reports i4u.b
