Thin is in seems to be the mantra of tablet manufacturers are new models of tablet computers are released on the market.

Tech experts explain the growing popularity of ultra thin tablets to the gadget appearing sleeker, sexier and easier to handle. However, despite their thin bodies, most of these slim tablets still have plenty of useful connections.

CNET's top 6 thinnest tablets, which considered their weight and girth, are the following.

1. Sony Xperia Z - 0.27 inch thickness, 1.09 lb, 10 inch screen

Noted for being water resistant, its HD Voice, good video camera and stunning music quality, the Sony Xperia Z was described by TechRadar as feeling and looking like a premium, high-quality products. It said the phone is proof that Sony could take a plain black square and make it something beautiful. This soon-to-be-released tablet features a quad-core Qualcomm processor, 1,920x1,200-pixel-resolution screen.

2. Apple iPad Mini - 0.28 inch thickness, 0.68 lb 7.9-inch screen

Sidhtech listed the iPad Mini, along with Google Nexus 7, as two of the best mini tablets in town. The iPad Mini's price tag is $329 for the 16GB version. The device is considered years ahead of competition in terms of design but it loses in terms of customisation because the iOS does not offer such flexibility. Its design is considered more intimate and booklike than the larger iPad and its cameras, storage capacities, optional LTE antenna and general functionality offer a full iPad experience. However, its A5 processer is not as strong as the fourth-gen iPad and iPhone 5 and typing on its smaller screen is not so comfortable.

3. Asus YF700 - 0.33 inch thickness, 1.32 lb, 10.1-inch screen

This tablet is said to rival the iPad display in sharpness and clarity, with the bonus of having apps that launch quick, GPS that works well and the best rear cameras on any Android tablet. However, on weakness is its battery life.

4. Google Nexus 10 - 0.35 inch thickness, 1.33 lb, 10-inch screen

The device is considered the best Android iPad alternative, known for its beautiful sharp screen, fastest processor among Android tablets, but charges very slowly. Priced at $399, it is still considered a good buy despite the lack of storage expansion option, few apps that take advantage of the screen and not very seamless navigation compared to the Nexus 7.

5. Apple iPad (4th Generation) - 0.37 inch thickness, 1.44 lb, 9.7-inch screen

Although it has lost its appeal as newer and thinner options are rolled out, it had upgrades and a lot of work done since the iPad 2 including the Retina Display and faster processor. Priced at $488.97, the A6X processor just added extra system speed and graphics power as well as improved its global cellular compatibility.

6. Barnes & Noble Nook HD - 0.43 inch thickness, 0.68 lb, 7-inch screen

Although it is the thickest tablet on this list, it has the lightest weight along with the iPad Mini. CNET recommends this tablet for people who would appreciate its comfortable design, low price and sharp screen.
