Tornado hits Sydney with heavy winds blowing at 213 kph
A tornado with a speed of 213 kilometres per hour has hit the southern beach suburb of Kurnell following the warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology on Wednesday morning.
The BoM stated that the destructive winds were among the fastest ever recorded in Sydney and which have now proceeded offshore from Bondi Beach after hitting Kurnell. Tornado has hit the city’s south with winds blowing at more than 200 kilometre per hour, damaging Sydney’s desalination plant and injuring three people.
The desalination plant reportedly sustained damages, and workers were sent out of the Caltex refinery. The Caltex spokeswoman said that the workers at Kurnell refinery were cleared so that they don’t get affected by the heavy storm. She added that she wasn’t aware of any injuries at the plant yet.
The bureau said that some parts of Sydney and New South Wales were still under the threat of severe thunderstorm as more of it is expected during the afternoon time. The photos of the damages have gone viral on social media including the picture pof a truck that was knocked over in Kurnell.
At 1:05 p.m. local time, the bureau sent a warning of severe thunderstorm detected on weather Radar close to Wisemans Ferry, Bundeena, Mangrove Mpountain, St. Albans and Bell. “These thunderstorms are moving towards the north east,” the statement read.
“They are forecast to affect Sydney city, Sydney airport and waters off Bondio Beach by 1:35 p.m. and Sydney Olympic Park, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Wyong by 2:05 p.m.”
Due to the constant hit by thunderstorms and tornadoes, Sydnet airport has been monitoring the strikes continuously, thereby advising passengers to check flight details with their airlines, an airport spokeswoman said.
