UberEats now delivers in Sydney

Foodies in the harbor city can now get the food they want “delivered at Uber speed,” as UberEATS rolls out in Sydney Tuesday.

Sydney is the latest of the 23 cities across the globe where Uber’s food delivery app operates. UberEATS tap the services of UberX drivers to deliver food from restaurant to customer’s doorstep.

As seen in Melbourne, users can try UberEATS for free, but they are eventually charged a $5 flat fee. On its website, UberEATS assures customers that “the average order takes 35 minutes from start to finish.”

Food delivery will be available through the app between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily. However, food deliveries through UberEATS are currently limited to Sydney’s central business district, eastern suburbs and the inner west. There are about 100 Sydney restaurants, including Three Blue Ducks, Chur Burger and Fratelli Fresh, that have partnered with UberEATS so far.

UberEATS expansion

In Australia, UberEATS started operation in Melbourne in April. According to David Rohrsheim, general manager of Uber in Australia and New Zealand, rollout of UberEats in other Australian cities will be launched towards the end of the year.

Rohrsheim said UberEATS success in Melbourne has set the Sydney launch plan rolling.

"It's a good success. We did expect that though, being a foody town — that's why we chose Melbourne as our first Aussie city,” he told Mashable.

Rohrsheim claimed that a number of Melbourne eateries registered 20 to 25 percent increase in sales since partnering with UberEATS. However, customers reportedly complained about inconsistent delivery time.

What set UberEATS apart from other food delivery apps, Rohrsheim said, are its list of upscale restaurants and its premium delivery service by car, unlike other services on bike or on foot.

Aside from Sydney and Melbourne, UberEATS operates outside of the United States in Edmonton and Ottawa in Canada; Paris in France; Singapore; and London in the United Kingdom. In the US, UberEATS delivers in Atlanta, Austin, Brooklyn, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, San Francisco - East Bay, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.
