UPDATE: US serviceman brings fellow military personnel to play golf with Tiger Woods
American military brought his friend, fellow serviceman, Huey Hughes as his caddie to play off with Tiger Woods in Dubai
Bringing his own caddie and friend, Lt. Col. Micheal Rowells has made it to his tee-off date with professional golfer Tiger Woods and flew from Afghanistan where he is currently deployed and off to Dubai.
Rowells beaten out 16,000 other amateur golfers for a chance to win at Desert Classic pro-am. Held at Emirates Golf Club, Dubai. On Wednesday Rowells flew to Dubai with his friend and who served as his caddie, Huey Hughes of Charleston, S.C. Both are assigned at 401st Army Field Support Brigade.
Having played with 14-time major winner, Tiger Wodds, 47-year-old Rowells said in an interview, an experience, he would never imagine would happen to him. Playing with great player he said has made him love his sports more and look forward to having his hands on the club.
“It’s amazing to watch how these guys hit the ball,” Rowells was quoted as saying by The Associated Press Sports Writer, Michael Casey.
Rowells added, “It makes me want to go back and practice…”
The amateur golfer did not expect the call from the tour organizers who informed his win in a draw to play with Woods. He has been deployed in Bagram Air Field military base in Afghanistan, where he and his friend, Hughes have been working for fourteen hours for eight months.
This is Rowells first combat tour in Afghanistan and he is assigned with logistics at the military base. The set of clubs used by the father of four was borrowed from the golf course.
"Here we are fighting these wars and deployed and all of sudden he wins this tournament and you are hand-selected to be caddy with a guy," the AP noted Rowells said beaming with pride. "To come out and do this is an opportunity of a lifetime."
