Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and the rest of the "Vampire Diaries" gang returned to the small screen for a brand new Season 5 filled with excitement, romance, new faces and, of course, new trouble up ahead.

The premiere episode, titled "I Know What You Did Last Summer," highlights on how Elena embraces a new chapter in her life called college and adjusts to it, especially when she has to spend time away from new boyfriend, Damon Salvatore. However, there were still other exciting things that happened and it certainly had the eyes of the "TVD" fans glued to television screens with their thoughts running wild.

Spoiler Alert: This review recaps the highlights of "The Vampire Diaries" Season 5, Episode 1 "I Know What You Did Last Summer."

- Elena Gilbert and Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) are excited for college life, as the two settle in their dorm with the aim of being normal as they go through their daily student life. They are excited as well to meet new people and one way to do that is at parties.

- Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) still pretends to be alive with Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R McQueen) helping her have contact with family and friends through sent emails, postcards and text messages. But for how long will Bonnie keep from the people that she loves the fact that she has been dead for months?

- Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) is still trapped, chained up and drowning in a safe while twin image Silas roams around Mystic Falls. It is already expected that Stefan will be able to survive his ordeal but the real question is how. Will help arrive to save Stefan or he will do it all on his own?

- New and interesting faces of new characters appear like the "unwanted" and mysterious roommate named Megan (Hayley Kiyoko), Jesse "The Flyer Guy" (Kendrick Sampson) and Nadia (Olga Fonda).

- It has been a long summer for Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) and she is having a hard time to accept the fact that she is now human. "Do you have any idea what it's like to run in heels?," Katherine tells Damon before begging for his help which shows how defenseless she is now, as she runs scared from the "enemies" chasing her and one of them is Silas.

- Damon Salvatore promises girlfriend Elena that he will take care of her little brother, Jeremy Gilbert, while she's away at Whitmore College. However, trouble seems to follow Jeremy like getting expelled due to a fight on the first day of school or a car accident which makes it hard for Damon to live up to this "father-figure" and keep his promise to Elena that Jeremy will be safe with him.

The exciting events will continue as "The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 Episode 2 titled "True Lies" airs on Thursday, Oct 10, at the CW network. As a foretaste on what will happen next, the synopsis on the follow-up episode claims that Damon will ask for Sheriff Forbes' help in finding his brother Stefan, Elena and Caroline will investigate on who took the trouble of covering up roommate Megan's murder and why and new character Nadia will be using violence in making a point when it comes to her personal plans.
