‘Vampire Diaries’ Season 5 Episode 12 Recap/Spoilers: Katherine is ‘The Devil Inside’ Elena’s Body, Watch Promo Video For Episode 13 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 returned with Episode 12 "The Devil Inside" focusing on the story of Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) taking over Elena Gilbert's (also Nina Dobrev) body. The episode shows the continuation of Katherine's plan on Elena with additional devilish acts like further damaging her relationship with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and exposing Caroline's (Candice Accola) scandalous behavior.

Spoiler alert: This feature contains major spoilers on "The Vampire Diaries" Season 5, Episode 12 "The Devil Inside." In order to convince people that she is Elena Gilbert, Katherine told Matt (Zach Roerig) about her dirty little secret compelled him to play along with her plan.

Earlier that day, Nadia (Olga Fonda) informed Katherine that the Travellers need her corpse to complete a spell that will make Katherine have complete control over Elena's body and her doppelganger will be gone forever. Nadia tried to retrieve her mother's corpse from Damon but she failed. "Give it up, you're not getting it back," Damon, who buried Katherine's corpse, tells Nadia.

Elena finds out that her life is in danger and Nadia wants to finish the plan since Elena's friends are also getting suspicious about her absence. Katherine suggests that she could attend Matt's welcome back party for Tyler (Michael Trevino) and hang out with Stefan (Paul Wesley) to get the information on where Damon buried her corpse.

Damon returns to the Salvatore mansion with Enzo (Michael Malarkey) waiting for him with his surprise gift, the unconscious Aaron Whitmore (Shaun Sipos). The Augustine vampire tried to convince Damon again about his revenge plan but Damon still refused to go back to his old ways and let Aaron go.

At the party in the Lockwood mansion, Caroline confessed to Elena, without knowing it is Katherine inside her body, about what she did with Klaus. Katherine was stunned with the information she received and saw an opportunity to expose Caroline's secret with Tyler.

Tyler obviously did not handle the news well and slammed Caroline for her behavior. Stefan also discovered what Caroline did but defended his friend by telling Tyler that Caroline did not deserve that kind of treatment.

Katherine, Nadia and the Traveller Mia (Taylor Treadwell) got hold of Katherine's corpse and decided to finish the spell to make Elena disappear for good. However, Elena regained consciousness and escaped to ask her friends for help after fighting off Nadia and Mia.

When Elena run into Damon, Mia woke up and continued the spell and it worked just in time before Elena could tell Damon about her problem. Katherine, who now has complete power over Elena's body, told Damon that their relationship is over before leaving him behind looking stunned with what just happened.

The consequence of what Katherine did caused Damon Salvatore to reunite with Enzo and become the bad boy vampire again. The ending scene showed Damon killing Aaron and Enzo looking pleased as he stated: "Now that's the Damon Salvatore I remember."

A promo video for the next episode has been released showing Damon and Enzo back in their dark path just like before and Stefan is not happy about it. Furthermore, the WetPaint spoiler report claims Elena will be cozying up to Stefan at the "Bitter Ball" in Whitmore College making Caroline and Bonnie (Kat Graham) suspicious that there is something different with their best friend.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 continues with Episode 13 titled "Total Eclipse of the Heart" on Thursday night, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. ET on the CW network.
