Spoiler Alert: This feature contains major spoilers on "The Vampire Diaries" Season 5, Episode 19 "Man on Fire." Stefan is helping Elena with her studies as a distracting tactic from breaking up with Damon (Ian Somerhalder).
At the Lockwood mansion, Jeremy (Steven R McQueen) and Matt (Zach Roerig) are busy searching for the Travellers' knife. Damon arrives asking the two to hand over the weapon but finally revealed that they lost it. "Don't let me in because I will kill both of you," Damon warned.
Meanwhile, the Travellers had Tyler (Michael Trevino) chained up because the hybrid kept on popping up while the Passenger is still inhabiting his body. Markos revealed that the Travellers plan is to put an end to the witches' curse prohibiting them to settle with Sloan (Caitlin McHugh) helping in testing the procedure of undoing the curse with the doppelganger blood.
Tyler witnessed Markos succeeding in breaking the curse while announcing to the Travellers that they need more doppelganger blood to completely undo the witch curse so they can finally settle down. With that, things are not looking good for Stefan and Elena, the remaining doppelgangers in Mystic Falls.
Back at Whitmore College, Enzo arrived to interrupt Stefan and Elena's study time to confront the younger Salvatore vampire about what happened to Maggie James with the other students compelled and a little help from Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and Luke (Chris Brochu) . Enzo found out from Sloan that a Ripper brutally killed Maggie in 1960 but Stefan insisted he had nothing to do with it.
Flashback scenes showed the tender moments between Maggie and Enzo including the part where Maggie was willing to be turned into a vampire to be with him. However, Enzo did not want that to happen so he just compelled Maggie to leave Whitmore and forget about him.
Other flashback scenes showed Maggie has not completely forgotten about Enzo because she wanted to seek revenge thinking that the man she loved died in the Augustine fire and Damon Salvatore is responsible. It became easy for Damon to rip off Maggie's head because his humanity was turned off at that time.
When Damon finally admitted to Enzo that he was the one who killed Maggie, his best buddy was obviously upset. Enzo wanted to hate Damon for what he did but the Augustine vampire decided to just turn his humanity off in order to feel nothing on Maggie's death.
A violent confrontation happened between Damon, Stefan and Enzo that ended with Enzo taking Elena away. Damon tried to fix the situation playing the friendship card with Enzo. The bad boy Salvatore vampire has also showed his concern with Elena even though he previously told her that he does not want to see her or be friends with her.
However, Stefan found Enzo and the two got into another violent confrontation that made Stefan grab Enzo's heart. Enzo used the situation to make Stefan carry the burden if Damon finds out that his brother killed his best friend.
Enzo moved back leaving Stefan looking stunned while holding Enzo's heart. Enzo died and Stefan decided not to tell Damon about it because his brother already had a rough year and the news about Enzo's death and who is responsible will devastate him.
Another issue tacked in this episode is the Other Side and its Anchor, Bonnie. Liv explained that Markos' return from the Other Side is not a good sign and she has to say goodbye to her friends. Bonnie realizes the gravity of the situation but decided to just keep it to herself and not let anyone know including her boyfriend Jeremy.
Damon and Stefan had a brotherly talk about Enzo and Damon assures that he will fix the mess because he owes Enzo for stopping him from hating Stefan during his time at the Augustine cell. However, Enzo showed up as a ghost stating that it is too late for Damon to make amends because he never lets go of a good vendetta.
"The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 returns with Episode 20 titled "What Lies Beneath" on Thursday night, May 1, at 8 pm ET on the CW Network.
