"The Vampire Diaries" Season 5 will finally reveal a dark secret that vampire Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) has been keeping for years. The revelation will take place in Episode 9 titled "The Cell" with the released synopsis teasing about a flashback to Damon's past while girlfriend Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) discovers something about her family as well.

The episode synopsis reads: "FLASHBACKS TO A DARK TIME IN DAMON'S LIFE - Stefan (Paul Wesley) continues to offer Katherine (Nina Dobrev) his support while trying to mask his own pain, until Caroline (Candice Accola) shows up with an unusual form of therapy. After trying to make amends with Caroline, Elena (Nina Dobrev) grows so concerned about Damon (Ian Somerhalder) that she turns to Aaron (guest star Shaun Sipos) for help. Later, when Damon tells Elena about a terrible ordeal in his past that he has kept secret for decades, she shares the disturbing information she just learned about her own family. Finally, Aaron decides on a desperate course of action after a conversation with Dr. Wes (guest star Rick Cosnett)."

Additionally, the Cartermatt.com report teases a still image for Episode 10 titled "Fifty Shades of Grayson" where Aaron Maxfield (guest star Shaun Sipos) looks terrified with an upset Damon. The report reads: "Should Damon be worried about Aaron stealing the woman in his life? It's a little hard to say right now, given the place that we are at in production. However, for the time being we have not seen anything on the subject, and it feels a little bit more like that Damon is feeling threatened over something that is effectively nothing other than his own paranoia."

Add that up to the complicated Damon-Elena-Stefan love triangle story with the return of Stefan Salvatore's (Paul Wesley) memory from Episode 6 titled "Handle with Care." Actress Nina Dobrev revealed to TVLine during an interview that the situation will be the "elephant in the room."

The actress shared: "When you're in a relationship and there's an ex-boyfriend around, the significant other is always like, 'Hmm, I wonder...' There's always that insecurity. They might say that it's OK, but it's in the back of their mind. It's the same thing with Elena and Damon. He's pretending to be OK with it, but he can't unthink and unknow what he heard and what he knows now."

Ms Dobrev further added that the Stefan-Elena connection due to the doppelganger history will "always cause tension in the Damon-Elena relationship from moving onwards. "Vampire Diaries" Season 5 airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on the CW network.
