‘The Voice’ Season 9 Battle Round premiere highlights: Jordan Smith, Zach Seabaugh, Ellie Lawrence, Mark Hood and James Dupré impress judges again [Watch Videos]
The Battle Round of “The Voice” Season 9 aired on Monday on NBC and saw Mark Hood giving a spectacular performance and Pharrell making the most of the opportunity by stealing Team Atlas from Team Gwen.
The nail-biting battle saw some of the most wonderful contenders compete against each other. The contestants performed on the stage under the guidance of the guest mentors - John Fogerty (Team Adam), Selena Gomez (Team Gwen), Brad Paisley (Team Blake) and Missy Elliott (Team Pharrell).
In this round, two members of a same team take the centre stage to perform the same song in front of the judges and the audience. The mentor then selects a candidate out of the two for the next round, while the other one is dumped from the team. However, the losing artist can be stolen by the other coach.
The Battle Round kick started with a performance by Jordan Smith against teammate Regina Love from Team Adam. They performed on “Like I Can” by Sam Smith. The cut-throat competition left Adam Levine in trouble of making the toughest decision on the show so far, but he eventually went on to pick Jordan and dumped Regina from the show.
Next pair to compete against each other on the stage was Tyler Dickerson and Zach Seabaugh from Team Blake. They performed “I'm Gonna Be Somebody" by Travis Tritt. Zach’s young and rich voice made Blake to select him over Tyler.
The next hopefuls on the stage were Ellie Lawrence and Tim Atlas from Team Gwen. They performed "Sweater Weather" by The Neighbourhood. Ellie’s melodious voice and raw talent helped her secure her position in the team yet again. Whereas, Tim Atlas was dumped despite performing equally well.
It was then time for a performance by Team Pharrell’s Celeste Betton and Mark Hood. The two performed "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. The battle was too bold and left the judges in awe.
“That was my favorite battle that I have ever seen,” were Gwen’s words for the performance. Mark was chosen by Pharrell but Celeste won appreciation for her performance too.
Dustin Monk and James Dupré from Team Adam were next to perform in the Battle Round. The duo performed “Fortunate Son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was James who took the cake owing to his stunning vocals.
Team Blake’s Barrett Baber and Dustin Christensen performed "Walking in Memphis" by Marc Cohn. Barrett’s own style and stage presence forced Blake to choose him, but Adam and Gwen pressed the buttons to steal Dustin.
