Dayna Morales, the waitress who alleged that an anti-gay family left her a homophobic rant in lieu of a tip on their receipt, has been dismissed from her employment. The former U.S. Marine is apparently also returning the donations she received when her story became viral after it was learned that she did not donate the money to a charity as she claimed she had.

“Ms Morales and Gallop Asian Bistro have made a joint decision that Ms Morales will no longer continue her employment at our restaurant. We wish her well in the future,” a statement on the Facebook page of the Gallop Asian Bistro restaurant reads.

It all started in mid-November when Morales posted on the Have A Gay Day Facebook page a photo of the receipt she allegedly received from a family she had served at the restaurant in Bridgewater, New Jersey. Instead of giving her a tip, the couple apparently left her a note, saying they couldn’t give her a tip because they didn’t approve of her lifestyle.

The online community were outraged on Morales’ behalf. After all, the unnamed couple stiffed a hardworking waitress on tip just because they didn’t like gay people.

She received around $2000 donations from sympathisers all over the world, and even claimed that she would donate it to the Wounded Warrior Fund, an organisation that helps injured service members.

All appeared to be well, with the injustice of a couple righted by the caring Internet community, until it was discovered that Morales lied about everything.

The couple, who refused to be identified, contacted NBC 4 New York and said that they never left any demeaning messages on their receipt. Also, they even gave Morales a tip of $18. They showed proof to back their claim, a copy of their receipt and their credit card bill that showed that they were charged for the tip that they wrote.

Morales still stood by her story, but with hard evidence against her, it’s difficult not to cast doubt on her version.

Then it turned out that even her claim that she was donating the money she received to the veterans’ organisation was dubious as well.

A Wounded Warrior representative checked for donations by her name and the zip codes for Morales’ residence of Bedminster and the restaurant’s location of Bridgewater, and so far, the rep was unable to match any donations.

However, the representative wasn’t dismissing Morales’ claim yet, telling the Bridgewater Patch that Morales could have made the donation from a different zip code or through a third party.

But if her friends were asked, the Wounded Warriors shouldn’t hold their breath. Morales is allegedly a pathological liar who always had to invent stories.

Her co-worker Julie Howat told the Journal News that Morales once said that she had brain cancer and that her home was severely damaged during Hurricane Sandy, which devastated a large portion of New Jersey.

“Any tragedy that happened, she had to be a part of it. She needed sympathy and empathy.”

One of the biggest lies that she had told before the receipt story became viral was that she had served in Afghanistan and was the sole survivor of an explosion that killed her platoon.

While she had indeed served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve for four years until May 2013, there was “no indication of combat service in Iraq or Afghanistan.” In fact, she was even dishonourably discharged for failing to fulfil her reserve obligation.

The good news is that some people who have donated money to Morales have been refunded. At least three people who sent money through Paypal told NBC New York that they have received an email from the e-commerce company that said their donation was refunded.
