'Wake Up Call' Selfie Campaign: The New Charity Craze On The Internet After The 'Ice Bucket Challenge'
The latest charity campaign on the Internet is now being dubbed as the new "Ice Bucket Challenge." The #WakeUpCall selfie, which is the latest campaign from Unicef, has the famous celebrities sharing pictures of themselves just moments after they woke up.
In the #WakeUpCall selfie campaign, the participants are also encouraged to nominate their friends comparable to the rules of the "Ice Bucket Challenge" that went viral last August. According to a Telegraph report, Unicef UK ambassador Jemima Khan launched the new fundraising campaign and explained what the #WakeUpCall is about on social media site Twitter.
"Post a video of your #wakeupcall or a photo of yourself first thing and donate to UNICEF http://www.wakeupcall.org.uk or text SYRIA to 70007. Then nominate three friends to show us their #wakeupcall and help wake people up to the crisis for Syrian children," Khan posted on her Twitter account @Jemima_Khan before sharing an image of herself with a disheveled hair in bed last Monday, Oct. 6. English actor and presenter Stephen Fry took part in the new campaign and shared an image of himself in bed to his millions of Twitter followers. "I warn you, look away," Fry posted as a caption to image shared on his Twitter account @stephenfry. Click HERE to see photo.
"Thor" and "The Avengers" cast member Tom Hiddleston also participated in the #WakeUpCall selfie campaign. The 33-year-old English actor shared a photo of himself wearing a hood over his tousled hair on his Twitter account @twhiddleston. Click HERE to see photo.
Then, Tom Hiddleston nominated "Harry Potter" actress Emma Watson, "Line of Duty" star Keeley Hawes and British theatre director Josie Rourke. The other participants of the #WakeUpCall selfie campaign include Hugh Grant, Dan Snow, Claudia Winkelman, Naomi Campbell, Liam Neeson, Natalie Imbruglia and TV presenter Alexa Chung.
According to a Mirror report, the organizers of the new Internet charity campaign hope that the #WakeUpCall selfie campaign will come close to the success of the "Ice Bucket Challenge" where £7 million was raised for the Motor Neurone Disease Association in Britain while millions more were raised for several charities in the United States. As for the #WakeUpCall selfie campaign, the money raised will go directly to Unicef's Syria Emergency Fund.
