Wrong fire management in Australia?
Australia is a country which is prone to fire. It could be possible that the trial way and management of fire has been wrong all this time.
What if huge hazard reduction burns are not the most excellent way to bridle in the risk of major fires bringing jeopardy to people and properties?
The Australian National University researchers have been looking into the matter if extensive fuel reduction burning provides the right type of protection.
According to ABC Local, the fire scientists lead by Dr. Don Driscoll surmise smaller and more targeted burn are the line of attack to go.
Their research also shows that it is the site of the hazard reduction burns, not the total area burnt, and the high stake fire weather during the fire season.
Dr. Driscoll told ABC Local that occasionally the hazard reduction burns could be harmful to the environment. This is because some native species will not be able to cope with so much fire, which is why reduction of the size and frequency of the burns is advantageous for biodiversity.
He added that the long held conception that fire needs to be fought with is only part of the solution and improved fire management requires more intelligent options.
