Pre-orders for the iPhone 4S reached one million on Friday breaking the record first-day sale set by the iPhone 4 last year.

Apple attributed the record number to two more carriers, Verizon Wireless and Sprint, selling the new iPhone model other than AT&T. AT&T set the original record with 600,000 sales of the iPhone 4 to its subscribers in 2010. On Friday, it received 200,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4S in the first 12 hours.

Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, also said the first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched, according to CNET.com.

The iPhone 4S was unveiled a week ago. It features a dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera and "wireless system" that allows AT&T's network to offer up to 14.4Mbps download speeds. The iPhone 4S also comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models.

However, the design and size of the screen is the same as iPhone 4's.

Sales starts on Friday with the 16GB model priced at $199. The 32GB iPhone 4S will sell for $299 and the 64GB for $399.
