A 143-megapixel Camera Has Been Created Using A Scanner
A 143 megapixel camera has been created by designer and photographer Dario Morelli. The first of its kind, the camera can take pictures that are extremely clear and vivid. The details seen in the pictures are spectacular since the quality of the images is very high. Morelli used a scanner to create the 143 megapixel camera.
He created a medium format digital camera with part of the Epson V30-series scanner. Engadget website explains that since scanners are nothing but "extra-large image sensors," this creation has been possible. The process that went into the creation of this camera is extremely interesting. Parts of the scanner like the main board, stepper motor and the sensor board were used for the camera. For the scanner to turn on, an internal light was created for the scanner's auto-calibration system to function.
The camera is in the shape of a box, like the Camera obscura but Morelli has made it user-friendly. He has designed the camera in a manner such that it can be carried around and can also be placed on a tripod. The camera is better than professional cameras in terms of detail and the quality. However, there are a few disadvantages to Morelli's creation, it has low light sensitivity and so night photography becomes hard. It does not have a live mode or a viewfinder to actually frame the shot. Techspot states that the camera requires an external battery and a computer as well to function. The photo too may take seconds to minutes to be shot as the light sensitivity is less and it takes longer.
However, it is undeniable that despite its drawbacks, this camera is unique and the quality of the images is great. The detail in the picture is like nothing seen before thanks to its high resolution.
You can view the sample images taken by the spectacular camera here. Engadget has also tweeted a picture of the camera.
