Don't keep your hopes high for the replacements of your 1st generation iPod Nano, because it will be replaced with the same unit, just the good ones though, and not the new Nano as some of the consumers wished to receive.

Apple spokesperson confirmed to Mashable that Apple will be sending 1st generation iPod Nanos to those consumers whose Nanos match the serial numbers of the units with defective batteries.

Earlier a statement was made by Apple announcing that they have determined a case regarding the battery defect on the 1st generation iPod Nanos sold between Sept. 2005 and Dec. 2006.

Apple said that these units may have overheating batteries and may pose a safety risk, and it is recommended to discontinue the use and have it replaced. Issues were traced back to a certain supplier that produced defective batteries.

Apple provided the process on how to order your replacement unit and guaranteed it is free of charge. Replacements may be made online through https://supportform.apple.com/201110/ - an Apple dedicated page provided for the iPod Nano replacement program. When you reached the page, you will be asked to select your country. After which, you will be asked to key in the serial number of your iPod Nano. This will verify if your unit matches the units with defective batteries.

To identify if your Nano is a 1st generation one, it should have a black or white plastic front and a silver metal back. Later released iPos Nanos have metal front and back covers. For more information or if assistance is needed, you may visit the nearest Apple Retail Store in your area. But before your rush, remember that this battery issue is specific to the 1st generation iPod Nano and does not affect any other iPod models.

Replacements of the units will take approximately 6 weeks upon Apple's receipt of your defective unit. Consumers must take note that personalized iPod Nanos will be replaced by non-personalized units. So if you have an iPod Nano with your name on it, or a personalized message engraved, the replacement will no longer have the same. For the sentimental ones, you might one to think twice on giving up your personalized units or keep it as a memorabilia.
