2 iPhone 6 Releases in 2014 as Apple Mulls iOS Phablet & iPhone 5S-Like Builds – Analyst
Two iPhones for 2014 is quite a possibility, a new report said, and the separate release dates will likely produce a handset that bears the same iPhone 5S form-factor and the phablet-size iPhone 6, which could be called the iPhone Air.
Obviously the pattern being followed here is the one Apple has introduced in 2012, when the first iPad Mini was unveiled along with the iPad.
However, Katy Huberty of Morgan Stanley was short on specifics when she shared in a latest research note that Apple is considering a faster upgrade cycle for its iOS devices starting in 2014.
We can expect "multiple refreshes per year," from the tech giant, Ms Huberty was reported by Apple Insider as saying. Such accelerated push will focus on the iPhone business model, bringing it line with the iPad, which now comes in the 9.7-inch iPad Air and the 7.9-inch iPad Mini 2, laced in the latest iteration with a high-resolution Retina display panel.
Does this mean the tech world can anticipate two iPhone builds in a span of 12 months? Ms Huberty is not saying but she stressed that the assessment she offers is based on recent dialogues with top Apple executives.
The analysts bared too that she recently talked with Tim Cook and Peter Oppenheimer, Apple CEO and CFO respectively, giving considerable weight to the supposed 2014 roadmap for the tech titan.
Two iPhones in a single year makes sense and Apple is likely taking a serious look on such a game-plan because almost everyone else is making more than one smartphone flagship phone in a given calendar year.
Samsung has the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3 for 2014. HTC the One in regular-size and the Max build. Sony too is serving the Xperia Z in multiple configurations. These mobile device makers are reaping great amounts of success and billions in revenues, apparently big enough for Apple to ignore.
Besides, the global smartphone trend seems gravitating towards the phablet class, according to CNBC, so two iPhones will be very beneficial for Apple. The company is only bound to satisfy its existing customer base, perhaps add more millions of fans as it embraces the searing phablet rage started by Samsung and more billions to its already solid cash coffer.
So two iPhone screen sizes to wow tech aficionados next year is not entirely impossible, according to Gotta Be Mobile. The tech site added that Apple fans can expect 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch builds, as suggested in a recent NPD DisplaySearch report.
And while the iPhone maker is finally convinced to give up the standard 4-inch screen, reports hinted too that one major emphasis of the giant-screen iOS smartphones is one-hand use - meaning consumers will be able to navigate through the devices with a single hand.
Other possible killer features of the iPhone 6 are the following: sapphire glass cover and gadget coating, charging on the go due to a built-in solar panel, 64-bit CPU and up to 4GB of RAM. These are discussed here and here.
The first Apple phablet is also seen to introduce a radical body-build thanks to the possible use of LiquidMetal casing material and a wraparound display screen with invisible control keys that actually fade out when not in use. These are based on previously published Apple patents.
So far, release date predictions for the iPhone 6 vary. Some analyst look to September 2014 while others maintain that a summer debut is highly possible. But a first quarter availability in the same year is now part of the equation if indeed Apple is planning for two iPhone touchdowns.
