2015 NFL Draft News: Jameis Winston To Meet With Chicago Bears
One of the top prospects, Jameis Winston, in the 2015 rookie draft of the National Football League, or NFL is set to meet with the Chicago Bears according to reports. The Bears own the seventh overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and they have veteran quarterback Jay Cutler under contract for the next few years.
NFL Insider Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the development on social media Twitter.
Schefter back in the 2014 NFL Season said that Chicago may be looking at trading Cutler before the start of the new NFL season and the team can save $12.5 million against the salary cap. Cutler, who is guaranteed to get paid $15.5 million for 2015, had another disappointing year for Chicago last season.
The Bears opened at 2-1 for 2014 but struggled the rest of the season to bow out of the playoff race early. Chicago finished 5-11 for the year and had the worst record in the NFC North division and one of the worst records in the entire league to earn the high draft pick in the rookie draft. In the 2015 offseason, the Bears brass admitted that they need to evaluate their roster specifically the situation at the quarterback position.
"We're not up against a deadline. My experience has always been that you need to gather the information, and in turn, you usually make better decisions. We're in that process, and we'll keep you posted,” New Bears head coach John Fox said to ESPN.com in mid-February.
Cutler, who was drafted 11th overall in the 2011 NFL Draft, finished with 3,812 passing yards on 370 of 561 completions or 66.0% passing percentage, with 28 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in the 2014 NFL Season. He is expected to battle for the starting QB spot against veteran Josh McCown, who was acquired by the Bears in this offseason.
The Bears can try to move up in the draft and draft Winston or another top QB prospect in Marcos Mariota. Both players are touted QBs in college football and both won the Heisman Trophy. However, if the Bears draft either Winston or Mariota that also means that the Cutler era with the Bears will soon be over.
