Reports came out last week that LG is rolling out its new flagship, the Optimus G2, on August 20, quickly sparking rumours that the Nexus 5 release date is happening soon and the two devices are one and the same.

The G2, according to LG, will be officially introduced August 7 and basing on the specs that had leaked out, Android watchers swiftly jumped to the conclusion that the LG-made device will be the Nexus 5 template inside and out.

As expected, both LG and Google are mum on the matter but Android fans insist the tell-tale signs are too compelling to ignore that the stock Android flagship is inspired by Optimus G2. This despite LG's pronouncement a few months ago that it was not producing the Nexus 5, at least not yet during that time.

But now that the G2 is almost upon us, the assumptions grew stronger and there are three solid evidences supporting the expectation that Google Play Store will also sell the latest Optimus come October, bearing the Nexus 5 brand by that time.

Nexus 5 is the LG device codenamed Megalodon

Phone Arena reported in March this year that LG will soon release its 2013 flagship named then as Megalodon. It was viewed as the LG's answer to Samsung's Galaxy S4 but the launch never happened and the company instead announced after a few months that its top product for 2013 is centred on the latest Qualcomm chip architecture, which is the Snapdragon 800.

Those closely monitoring the handset now know that Megalodon is actually the Optimus G2, which LG will start selling next month then will morph into the Nexus 5 by the first week of October with one giant twist. The following sentences explain why.

The Optimus G2 and Nexus 5 pacing fits with the Android update process

LG is pushing out the G2 with Jelly Bean 4.2.2 out of the box despite the fact that Jelly Bean 4.3 could be out by the time of its unveiling. The reason for this is the handset's production is already completed and accommodating a last-minute addition of the new Android sweet would be too late.

The G2, anyway, will eventually get its upgrade, likely jumping over Jelly Bean 4.3 to chew in Key Lime Pie directly but not before taking on the Nexus 5 branding. Simultaneously, the G2 and Nexus 5 will exist - sharing the same hardware and body-build and differing only in Android serving, the former with LG skin and the other native.

Optimus G2 specs are very much Nexus 5

A 5.2-inch screen display with 1080p resolution, a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 CPU, a 3GB of RAM, a 13MP main cam shooter, a superfast wireless broadband thanks to LTE-Advanced are among the headline specs of the G2, which suit the insanely great features that Google had promised to deliver earlier this year.

As Phone Arena mused, connecting the dots between the speculations surrounding Nexus 5 and Optimus G2 will convince that the two handsets will be churned out from the same production facilities operated by LG.

LG dropped many jaws with the way it rendered the Nexus 4, which was based on Optimus G, last year. It is excepted that the company will exceed itself with the above specs improvements plus a couple of cool design tweaks such as the Zero Gap tech that resulted to less bezel bordering the phone screen and the elimination of conspicuous control key like the relocation of the volume rocker to the backside of the device.

It was clear as daylight that in designing the Optimus G2, inside and out, that LG is following too the final device model and specifications provided by Google, with Nexus 5 as the parallel target product.
