3D Technology to be Used in Future iPhones and iPads?
Tech giant Apple have expressed its desire to enter the 3D market for years and the new job opening in the company suggests that its pursuing the technology to be fuse in future iOS devices.
Apple is currently looking for "Computer Vision specialist to strengthen its multi-view stereo research group that has a Ph.D. degree in a Computer Vision related field such as Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science." and the job requires the applicant to "have a genuine interest in technology and be a skilled developer with knowledge and experience in Computer Vision, Image Analysis and 3D geometry."
The job opening is posted in Apple's career website. Further details of the job opening suggested that the company is continuing to pursue 3D technology for its products such as iPhones and iPads.
According to the post, in coalescence with other patents filed in the past by the company, leads us to believe that Apple may be looking to invest resources to develop 3D technology. While Apple has yet to do so in any of its widely available products, Android phone manufacturers, LG and HTC, have since released iterations of their handsets with 3D cameras and passive 3D displays. Past patents over the years have shown Apple experimenting with 3D GUIs and working on a 3D camera among other things.
Last October, Apple also managed to acquire C3 Technologies, which is a company that specializes in 3D mapping. This new career post could be for someone to work on integrating the 3D maps into the iOS. There was a changeon the Google Maps in Apple's iPhoto application. This could be a temporary solution before Apple successfully integrates and introduces 3D mapping and localization. Moreover, the details of the job opening support it.
Entitled SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping), the technology is "a technique used by robots and autonomous vehicles to build up a map within an unknown environment, or to update a map within a known environment, while at the same time keeping track of their current location."
3D Televisions have become quite popular in the recent years. Apple seems trying to pull something similar to 3DeeSlide for iPhone, which was released in 2010 and users responded positively to the feature.
