5 networking sites that could be the next big thing
Facebook may be on King of the social media these days but it doesn't mean that it would remain unchallenged forever. Remember the social networking market is always in a constant state of change and one misstep would mean social oblivion. After all a few years ago Myspace was actually in direct competition with Facebook before it was trounced by the networking giant. Google's new networking site, Google+ is making waves and is now being touted as better than Facebook. So while Facebook, Twitter and Linkedln is the top three at this moment but there are other social media sites out there that could potentially unseat them at the top of the heap.
Here are 5 interesting social media sites that you should check out:
Empire Avenue- If you've ever been interested in putting a price on people and the social media this could be the site for you. Empire Avenue is basically a mix of social network and social game that lets members invest virtual currency in people and brands that interest them. Members will have to think about what connection is more important to them in terms of virtual currency. According to Tom Ohle the VP of Marketing/Media Relations this means that members will have to seriously evaluate every connection they make. "Our 'Buy' mechanism generates a connection that is much deeper than a 'Follow,' but less intrusive than a 'Friend,' which makes it easier to connect across the world while playing a fun game that, in itself, is based on social media engagement," Ohle says. "And, based on how deep members get involved, they might end up using it as a training tool, a social network, or as a way to become a virtual millionaire."
Color- This free iPhone and Android app will let users connect based on the users' location and proximity to others. Users can share videos, photos and text conversations without having to establish permanent connections. According to founder Bill Nguyen, Color provides a mobile layer on top of the social networks users already love. Color works by using advanced technology to process location information, social network graphs, and device sensors to accurately define proximity, so users can share and interact with their community in a way that's more personal and relevant than the broadness of the Web. "We believe that relevance from proximity is the next step forward for social networking," says Nguyen.
foursquare- This mobile service lets users share where they are with their friends and lets users provide recommendations about products and locations. This is more useful for retailers and brands who want to attract customers and fans.
"The latest version of the mobile app (3.0) has transcended the check-in to actively change the way users experience the world around them," says Erin Gleason, PR manager at foursquare. "We've done this by highlighting three things: discovery, encouragement, and loyalty." Users will have to discover new locations, encourage their friends to visit which will get the users points and free tools.
Hunch- This site will match you with your interests via a series of questions. Members can search their friends' preferences for the perfect gift idea or use it to prepare for a date.
IMVU- This is basically an online social entertainment network. Members are given a virtual currency and have to participate in activities to get more money. The virtual currency is used in customizing the 3D avatars the site uses. The big draw here is that members can create their own virtual products to sell to other members thus making the experience more personalized. The site is available in Windows and as an app in the iPhone.
