5 Seconds Of Summer Celebrate Winning NME’s Worst Band Of The Year
Australian rock band 5 Seconds of Summer is the worst band of the year, according to NME. Rather than mope around and cry, Michael Clifford, Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin even celebrated their “win.”
The 2015 NME Awards saw a handful of musicians collecting their awards at the event in London on Wednesday. Understandably, the Aussie rock quartet weren’t present to receive their award themselves, but don’t think that it’s because they were ashamed of being called the worst band. On the contrary, they even campaigned for it.
“HOLY SH** WE GOT NOMINATED FOR WORST BAND AT THE NME AWARDS,” Clifford tweeted. “pls pls pls vote. I’m not even being sarcastic it would be so incredible to win.”
And then they won. Clifford and the boys couldn’t be happier. “Won the NME worst band award,” he wrote. “I’m so damn happy right now. tnx to everyone who voted #dreamscoming true.”
5SOS beat One Direction, Bastille, U2, Blink 182 and The 1975, which won last year, for the “honour.” If it’s a wonder why U2, which won Best Rock Act, Godlike Genius and Best Live Act in the past, was nominated, it might have something to do with their entire album “Songs of Innocence” being forced onto all Apple users. Former recipients of the Worst Band award include Oasis, Nickelback, the Jonas Brothers and 1D.
Fellow Australian Iggy Azalea also received a slightly better award, the Dancefloor Filler, which she won with Charli XCX for “Fancy.” British UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage has been named Villain of the Year, while Arctic Monkeys lead singer Alex Turner is the Hero of the Year. The UK series “Game of Thrones” is the Best TV Show, while the British historical film “Northern Soul” is the Best Film.
This year’s NME Awards also saw Kasabian being nominated for nine awards, the most ever in history, and winning three, including Best British Band.
