Six million users have already signed up to download the BBM app, BlackBerry reports.

It comes as a great surprise for the company, as it has been facing a really tough time of late. It has suffered a net loss of $965 million in the second quarter of this year. The BlackBerry Messenger or BBM app, however, was launched for iOS and Android only hours ago. It was made available on the App Store, Google Play and some selected Samsung App Stores for download.

The company delayed the launch of the app last month, as the software had been leaked even before the official launch. Finally, it was launched on Monday, Oct 21. BlackBerry has informed that users who downloaded the app must wait for some time before they can use it. Users are asked to register their email address after downloading the app, as they will be informed via email when they can begin using it.

The email registration was strategically planned by the company, as they smartly dodged any kind of server crash. BBM is probably BlackBerry's most loved feature . BlackBerry users can send messages for free. They are also notified when their messages are read. Users can also begin group chats. BBM turned out to be quite ahead of its time, as when it was launched, other carriers used to charge at least 15 cents for every message.

Andrew Bocking, the spokesman of the company, informed that the users who had signed up by this time would be able to download the app right away. The email registration was planned to manage the extraordinary demand for BBM. He said that the company was implementing an uncomplicated line-up system to ensure a smooth process. The company did not, on the other hand, give any information on how long other users should wait before they were allowed to download the app.
