Amazon Fire Phone vs. HTC One M8: Price and Specs Comparison in Australia
Amazon recently rolled out its first attempt with the smartphone industry through the Amazon Fire Phone which is aimed to compete with existing smartphones in the market. According to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, the Amazon Fire Phone is optimised for one-handed use. So how does Amazon Fire Phone fare against HTC One M8?
Display
In terms of display, the HTC One M8 has slightly bigger and better display compared with the Amazon Fire Phone. The HTC One M8 comes with 5-inch Super LCD3 display with a screen resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and image density of 441 pixels per inch (ppi).
Meanwhile, the Amazon Fire Phone is expected to have a 4.7-inch high-quality LCD display, with a screen resolution of 1,280 x 720 with an image density of 315 ppi.
Camera
When it comes to camera, the Amazon Fire Phone comes with better specs. The Amazon Fire Phone has 13-MP camera with f/2.0 lens with optical image stabilisation. It also features panorama, burst and action shots plus unlimited photo storage.
As for the HTC One M8, it only has 4-MP rear-facing camera and 5-MP front-facing camera with autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash.
Operating Systems
When it comes to operating systems, the two smartphones run on totally different systems. The Amazon Fire Phone runs on Fire OS 3.5.0, while the HTC One M8 runs on Android version 4.4.2 KitKat.
Processors
Both smartphones run on the same Qualcomm Snapdragon processors with the HTC One M8 having slightly better specs. The HTC One has Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.3 GHz. Meanwhile, the Amazon Fire Phone has Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz.
Memory
Both Amazon Fire Phone and HTC One M8 have 2 GB RAM. The former has an internal memory of either 32 or 64 GB, while the latter has 16 or 23 GB. However, the memory in the HTC One M8 can be expanded up to 128 GB via the microSD plus 50 GB cloud storage via the Google Drive. While the Amazon Fire Phone only has an added 5 GB of extra free space via the Amazon Cloud Drive.
Others Specs
The Amazon Fire Phone comes with a 12-month membership to its prime service, so users can choose from 33 million titles of music, movies and TV shows. There is also a 3-D effect included which allows users to view any image, map or Web content in a different way.
The smartphone's camera also scans for books, DVDs, phone numbers, QR codes, CDs, games and all other kinds of media. Then, it searches for the product in the Amazon database and finds a version users can buy from the online shopping Web site.
Meanwhile, the HTC One M8 has 2G/3G/4G LTE networks, GPS and Bluetooth connectivity. It also comes with free apps such as Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube and Google Talk. It also has an organiser, a calendar, a document viewer/editor, a photo viewer/editor and voice memo/dial/commands.
Price
In terms of price, the Amazon Fire Phone and the HTC One M8 are in the same price range. According to MobiCity, the HTC One M8 costs $689.95. Meanwhile, Time Magazine mentioned that Amazon Fire Phone costs around $690 with a no contract plan at AT&T.
