Amazon Fire Phone vs. iPhone 5S: Price and Specs Comparison in Australia
Amazon recently rolled out its first attempt with the smartphone through the Amazon Fire Phone which aimed to compete with the existing smart phones in the market. According to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, the Amazon Fire Phone is optimised for one handed use. So how does Amazon Fire Phone fare against the Apple's iPhone 5S?
Price
According to Apple Web site, iPhone 5S costs US$299 from either AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon. This translates to $317 in Australia. Meanwhile, Time Magazine mentioned that Amazon Fire Phone costs US$649 with a no contract plan at AT&T. This translates to $690 in Australia. Given the price, a smart phone user can already have two units of iPhone 5S for the price of one Amazon Fire Phone.
Display
In terms of display, Amazon Fire Phone has bigger and better display compared with iPhone 5S. According to Digital Trends, Amazon Fire Phone sports a 4.7-inch high quality LCD display, with a screen resolution of 1280 x 720 and an image density of 315 pixels per inches (ppi).
On the other hand, Apple Web site mentioned that iPhone 5S only has 4-inch multi-touch display with a screen resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels and an image density of 326 pixels per inches (ppi). It also has fingerprint-resistant oleopphobic coating front and support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously.
Camera
When it comes to camera, Amazon Fire Phone also comes with better specs. The same source cited above mentioned that Amazon Fire Phone has 13-megapixel camera with f/2.0 lens with optical image stabilisation. It also features panorama, burst, and action shots plus there is unlimited photo storage.
Meanwhile, based on the Apple Web site iPhone 5S only has 8-megapixel back facing camera with 1.2-megapixel front facing camera. It features panorama, autofocus, tap to focus, face detection, LED flash, and photo geotagging.
Operating Systems
When it comes to operating systems, the two smart phones run on totally different systems. Digital Trends mentioned that Amazon Fire Phone runs on Fire OS 3.5.0 while Apple Web site stated that iPhone 5S runs on iOS 6 which can be upgradable to iOS 7.1.1. There is also a planned upgrade of the smart phone's OS with the full roll-out of iOS 8 later this year.
Processors
Both smart phones also have totally different processors. According to the above-cited sources, Amazon Fire Phone comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz. On the other hand, iPhone 5S has Apple A6 chipset with dual-core Swift ARM v7-based clocked at 1.3 GHz.
Memory
Digital Trends also cited that Amazon Fire Phone has 2 GB RAM and an internal memory of either 32 GB or 64 GB. It also has an added 5 GB of extra free space via the Amazon Cloud Drive. Meanwhile, Apple Web site mentioned that iPhone 5S has only 1 GB of RAM and either 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB of internal memory. Users can also store the information from their iPhone 5S phone to iCloud.
Others Specs
According to Digital Trends, users who bought the Amazon Fire Phone can choose from 33 million titles of music, movies, and TV shows with the included 12-month membership to its prime service. The smart phone's camera also scans for books, DVDs, phone numbers, QR codes, CDs, games, and all other kinds of media. Then it searches for the product in the Amazon database and finds a version that users can buy from the online shopping Web site. There is also a 3D effect specs included which allows users to view any image, map or Web content in a different way.
Meanwhile, Apple Web site mentioned that iPhone 5S has fingerprint identity sensor to unlock the highly secured information from the phone. It also allows the users to buy from iTunes Store, the App Store, and the iBooks Store without entering a password. It also has LTE wireless capability which allows the users to upload and download information from their iPhone 5S phone in a fast and reliable manner. Other built in apps also come with the phone like Siri digital assistant, Calendar, Mail, iPhoto, iMovie, Garagebands, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and others.
