Amazon Fire Phone vs. Sony Xperia Z2: Price and Specs Comparison in Australia
E-commerce site Amazon is set to conquer the world of smartphones with the recent roll-out of Amazon Fire Phone. According to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, the Amazon Fire Phone is optimised for one-handed use. But how does Amazon Fire Phone fare against the Sony Xperia Z2?
Display
When it comes to display, Sony Xperia Z2 is slightly bigger than Amazon Fire Phone. According to the Sony Mobile Web site, Sony Xperia Z2 has 5.2-inch Triluminos™ display with a full high-quality screen resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Meanwhile, Digital Trends mentioned Amazon Fire Phone only has 4.7-inch high-quality LCD display, with a screen resolution of 1,280 x 720.
Camera
In terms of camera, Sony Xperia Z2 has a more powerful camera with 20.7-MP rear-facing camera and 2.2-MP front-facing camera. It also has a long list of camera features such as Burst mode, Geotagging, Smile Shutter, Touch capture and many others. On the other hand, Amazon Fire Phone only has 13-MP camera with f/2.0 lens with optical image stabilisation. It also features panorama, burst and action shots. There is unlimited photo storage as well.
Processors and Operating Systems
Both smartphones run on Qualcomm processors but with slightly different specs and a totally different operating systems. The same sources cited above mentioned Sony Xperia Z2 has a 2.3-GHz Qualcomm MSM8974AB quad-core processor running on Android 4.4 Kitkat. Meanwhile, Amazon Fire Phone has 2.2-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor running on Fire OS 3.5.
Memory
Sony Xperia Z2 has better memory compared with Amazon Fire Phone. Based on the above-mentioned sources, Sony Xperia has 3 GB of RAM with a flash memory of up to 16 GB. There is also a microSD card slot which will allow the phone's memory to be expanded up to 128 GB. On the other hand, Amazon Fire Phone only has 2 GB RAM and an internal memory of either 32 or 64 GB. However, it has an added 5 GB of extra free space via the Amazon Cloud Drive.
Others Specs
According to Digital Trends, those who are planning to buy Amazon Fire Phone can choose from 33 million titles of music, movies and TV shows with the included 12-month membership to its prime service.
There is also a 3-D effect specs included which allows users to view any image, map or Web content in a different way.
The smartphone's camera can also scan for books, DVDs, phone numbers, QR codes, CDs, games and all other kinds of media. Then, it searches for the product in the Amazon database and finds a version users can buy from the online e-commerce Web site.
Meanwhile, Sony Xperia Z2 has additional entertainment features like 3-D and motion gaming, TV launcher, PlayStation Certified, SensMe and SensMe slideshow, "WALKMAN" application, YouTube, Facebook application, Twitter, TrackID music recognition and xLoud Experience—audio filter technology from Sony. There are also pre-loaded applications in the smartphone such as Google Maps, Google Hangouts, Sony Select, Web browser (WebKit), Google Chrome, Google Play, Google Voice Search and Google Search.
Price
According to Whistleout.com, Sony Xperia Z2 is priced at AU$1,320 if buyers choose the $40 plan at Vodafone. Meanwhile, Time Magazine mentioned Amazon Fire Phone costs $649 (about AU$690) with a no contract plan at AT&T. Given this price, a smartphone user can already have two units of Amazon Fire Phone for the price of one Sony Xperia Z2.
